Accra has no shortage of computer training centres offering “AutoCAD classes,” and the range in quality is wider than most first-time applicants expect. Some are serious, curriculum-driven programs run by people who’ve worked in design offices. Others are a laptop, a cracked software license, and a set of YouTube tutorials repackaged as a “course.” Since a CAD certificate is only as valuable as the skill it actually represents, it’s worth interrogating a training provider before you hand over your fee — not after.
Here are seven questions worth asking any CAD institute you’re considering, including us.
1. What exactly is in the curriculum, module by module?
Ask for the actual course outline — not a marketing paragraph, the module breakdown. A serious CAD course should be able to tell you precisely what’s covered in what order: drafting fundamentals, annotation and documentation standards, 3D modeling, and progressively more advanced applications like corridor design, grading, or point-cloud/surveying workflows, depending on the specific software. If a provider can’t produce a real curriculum on request, that’s a signal the course is being taught ad hoc rather than to a fixed standard.
2. Who is actually teaching, and what’s their design/drafting background?
Software fluency and teaching ability are two different things, and neither is optional. Ask whether instructors have worked in an actual design, engineering, or construction office — not just used the software personally. An instructor who has produced real construction documentation understands drawing standards, common employer expectations, and the mistakes that get drawings rejected in practice — knowledge that doesn’t come from tutorials alone.
3. What certification do you actually receive, and who stands behind it?
This is where applicants get misled most often. Ask directly: is this certificate issued by the training centre itself, or is it affiliated with a recognized external body? And if it’s affiliated, what exactly does that affiliation mean?
Be direct with any institute that claims to be an “official partner” of a major software or training brand — ask them to clarify precisely what that partnership entails, because the terminology providers use here varies widely and isn’t always accurate. For what it’s worth: DIT is an authorized training associate of CADD Centre Training Services (a large, established international CAD training network), and we describe that relationship using that exact term rather than looser language like “official partner,” because it’s the accurate description of the relationship. Ask any provider you’re considering to be equally specific.
4. What delivery schedules actually fit your life?
A CAD course that only runs on a single fixed weekday-morning schedule is only useful if you can attend it. Ask what delivery streams are actually available — intensive/fast-track, regular morning, regular evening, or weekend — and whether those schedules run consistently or only “when enough people sign up.” If you’re currently employed or in school, a provider that only offers weekday-daytime classes may simply not be a workable option, regardless of how good the curriculum is.
5. Is there hands-on project work, or just tutorial-following?
CAD is a hands-on skill. A course structured around a capstone project — where you take a drawing from concept sketch through to a complete, dimensioned, annotated production-ready set — teaches you to actually solve drafting problems, not just replicate a demonstrated sequence of clicks. Ask whether the course includes an independent project component, and what it produces by the end.
6. What happens after you finish — is there any placement or portfolio support?
Be realistic here: no legitimate training institute can guarantee you a job, and you should be skeptical of any that claims otherwise. But it’s fair to ask what support exists once you complete the course — does the institute help with portfolio-building, maintain any employer relationships, or offer guidance on job searching in the local drafting and design market? Placement assistance (introductions, guidance, portfolio review) is a reasonable thing to expect and ask about; placement guarantees are a red flag.
7. What do actual past students say — and can you verify it?
Testimonials on a website are easy to write and hard to verify. Where possible, ask a prospective institute whether you can speak to a recent graduate directly, or look for independent reviews rather than relying solely on curated quotes. A provider confident in its outcomes should have no problem connecting you with a former student.
